Listing and Sequencing

Your activities for our sample house project, with the above information in mind, may only include the following activities:

Staking and layout
Site grading
Underground utilities
Underslab utilities
Concrete foundations
Concrete slab on grade
Rough Framing
Roofing
Rough electrical
Rough plumbing
Rough HVAC
Installation of windows
Lathing
Stucco scratch coat
Stucco Brown coat
Stucco finish coat
Drywall installation
Taping and finishing of drywall
Ceiling finish
Painting
Installation of kitchen cabinets
Installation of door frames
Doors
Finish hardware
Installation of carpet
Electrical trim
Plumbing fixtures
HVAC trim

You can probably think of other activities that should be included in this list and the unique nature of the house you are scheduling will certainly demand more or different activities. As you can see though, our preliminary schedule includes less than 30 activities. This is no where near what an as-planned schedule will require but it is adequate for the estimator to determine project duration during the bidding period.

Now that you have a list of construction activities to include in your schedule, put them in a sequence that approximates the construction sequence. You will probably find several paths through the project. In the above sequence, stucco scratch coat, brown coat and finish coat is a sequence that may not be related to installation of drywall, taping, and painting even though they may be taking place at roughly the same time.
